In Office CT ScannerSometimes a CT exam along with other tests is helpful in determining the diagnosis. Plain X-rays (like a basic chest x-ray) are not used much anymore in the evaluation of the sinuses. The best image of the sinuses can be obtained with a CT (computer tomography) scan. CT scans allow us to examine the sinuses in detailed cross-sections. We now have a miniature-CT scanner in our office. It is less intimidating than a conventional full-body CT scanner and uses a lower radiation dose. You need only sit in a chair for 20 seconds and in a few minutes we can have a high-quality image to review with you. The next steps in your treatment plan can be agreed upon right away. A scan can also help determine if the problem originates in the sinuses or elsewhere. If the problem is not in the sinuses, we can spare you from taking expensive antibiotics and avoid the side affects sometimes associated with them. The faster you begin your treatment, the faster you can get relief from your symptoms. Because the image is available immediately you can receive an immediate diagnosis rather than having to wait days or weeks. This means less time off work. Of course we can still examine CT scans done elsewhere whether on traditional film or on disk if you bring them with you at the time of your visit.
